Julius Georgiou

Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus

Julius Georgiou (IEEE M’98-SM’08) is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Cyprus. He received his M.Eng degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Ph.D. degree from Imperial College London in 1998 and 2003 respectively. His PhD work formed the basis of multiple patents and for the formation of Toumaz Technology Ltd and DNA Electronics Ltd, both Imperial College spinout companies. For two years he worked as Head of Micropower Design at Toumaz Technology Ltd in the UK. In 2004 he joined the Johns Hopkins University in the USA as a Postdoctoral Fellow, before becoming a faculty member at the University of Cyprus from 2005 onwards, where he also filed multiple patents. In parallel, he has been involved in the founding of AJM Med-i-Caps Ltd, a Cypriot medical device startup company. Furthermore, he’s a research collaborator of another Cypriot medical device company, Gynetronics Ltd, which is based on a joint patent created with Vasilios Tanos, a professor in Gynecology. Gynetronics Ltd was created after receiving a Cyprus Seeds grant to further develop the underlying technology, but which also funded the later stages of the initial patent application. Cyprus Seeds provided very experienced startup mentors and training on business development issues.
