George Georghiou

Founding Member of PHAETHON & Professor at University of Cyprus

George E. Georghiou is a Founding Member of the recently established European Centre of Excellence in Intelligent Sustainable and Efficient Solutions (PHAETHON), which belongs to the University of Cyprus. George is Professor in Renewable Sources of Energy and Grid Integration at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of University of Cyprus. George is also an avid entrepreneur by nature. He has been involved in a number of start-ups that have been formed to commercialise the technology that emanated from his team. One of the start-ups, (Zap Power) won the Cambridge University Entrepreneurs Competition and subsequently received VC funding (http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/news/charging-ahead) to commercialise wireless charging technology. A more recent start-up (Solex) received funding from Cyprus Seeds to commercialise the technology for early detection of faults in PV systems. George’s team also developed a software solution, SUNCASTER, for forecasting energy production, load demand and market forecasting, and is already provided as software as a service to DSOs, asset managers, PV system owners, Aggregators and energy suppliers. George’s team has received in excess of € 40 Million research funding for more than 80 projects in the field of energy (including EUROSTARS projects) and is currently collaborating with more than 20 companies (such as Hanwa QCells, Honeywell, Gantner Instruments etc), international research institutions and universities. His track record includes more than 20 years of experience, 500 peer-reviewed publications and 8000 citations. George has been acting as Expert Evaluator for predominantly Energy Proposals within the Innovation Fund, Green Deal, Horizon Europe, Horizon 2020 and other national and international calls.
